Mullan Suspended, Fined After Zakuani Tackle

29 April, 09:19, by admin Tags: , , ,

The verdict was already in. Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan was guilty of delivering a reckless and brutal tackle that broke the tibia and fibula of Seattle Sounders attacker Steve Zakuani on April 28. On Wednesday, Major League Soccer’s disciplinary committee delivered its sentence: a 10-game suspension and a $5,000 fine that includes the automatic one-game suspension and $250 fine for the ejection.

The penalty exceeds the record suspension of former Houston Dynamo midfielder Ricardo Clark, who was suspended nine games for violently kicking then-FC Dallas forward Carlos Ruiz in 2007.

“The seriousness of the injury, and the egregious and reckless nature of the challenge, was considered to be so great as to absolutely warrant and mandate a very severe punishment,” Nelson Rodriguez, MLS executive vice president of competition, technical and game operations, said via telephone. “There was actually very quick unanimity in deciding the level of punishment to administer against Mr. Mullan.”

Redknapp Denies and Wins

19 April, 11:28, by admin Tags: ,

Harry Redknapp, Tottenham Hotspur manager, says there has been no contact between himself and Chelsea. Redknapp’s success this past weekend in taking the Spurs to the quarter-finals and winning 5-0 in the Champions League had impressed the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

It has been reported that Carlo Ancelotti will leave the club, despite winning the Double last season. Chelsea could be searching for a new manager with the club destined to end the season without a trophy. However, Redknapp has dismissed rumors that he could leave White Hart Lane for West London at the end of the season. “I don’t take a lot of notice,” Redknapp told the Daily Mirror. “I just get on with it. It’s speculation. “I’ve never spoken to anyone from Chelsea. No one’s come to me and said that Chelsea are interested in me or anything else. I’ve got a job to do here. I love it here. I’m happy here.”

D.C. United Defeated the Columbus Crew 3-1

01 April, 09:44, by admin Tags: , ,

Charlie Davies has been out for 17 months since his automobile crash in VA and finally returned to a competitive match against Columbus. D.C. United was awarded a penalty kick and Davies wanted it. “He looked at me and said, ‘I need this, I want this,”‘ teammate Dax McCarty said. “I knew when I gave him the ball he was going to bury it for us.” “It just goes to show with faith, with belief in yourself, that you can achieve the impossible,” said Davies, who suffered a ruptured bladder, bleeding on the brain, a broken and dislocated left elbow, and broken bones in his right leg, nose, forehead and eye socket.

Davies converted the 63rd-minute penalty, added a second goal in the 77th minute and D.C. United defeated the Columbus Crew 3-1 last Saturday in both teams’ season opener. Robbie Rogers scored on a 79th-minute penalty kick for Columbus. Davies had his second goal minutes later after taking Marc Burch’s long ball.

Davies’ return comes just a day after the driver in the crash, who was legally intoxicated at the time, was sentenced to two years in prison.

Holden Goes Down in the UK

26 March, 15:10, by admin Tags: , ,

Last Saturday Stuart Holden had to be stretchered off after Manchester United defender Jonny Evans challenged him on the field. Holden was cut on his left knee and needed 26 stitches to close his wound. He will undergo further tests to see if there is any ligament damage and to see if he has to end his season early.

Evans was given a red card for the tackle as United got the 1-0 victory. Before Holden’s injury, he completed 28 passes and intercepted six balls. He also drew three fouls. The former Houston Dynamo man was dropped from next week’s US friendly matches.

Nani Returns to United

15 March, 07:54, by admin Tags: ,

Nani suffered a gash in his leg in a high challenge from Jamie Carragher during the 3-1 defeat at Liverpool. Nani did not think he could play in next weeks game but he ended up healing quicker than expected and will return to training this week. Michael Owen was also in training along with Antonio Valencia, who made his comeback from a broken ankle during Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Arsenal.

Park Ji-Sung is recovering from a hamstring injury and was taking part in a separate fitness work with one of the coaches, while Owen Hargreaves who sustained a hamstring injury six minutes into his most recent comeback in November was training with the reserves.

“The key is to have everyone available,” Ferguson said. “We’re in three competitions. Ji-Sung Park is making good progress – we’ll hopefully have him back for Saturday [against Bolton].

“Owen Hargreaves started training. You never know, we may have him available for the end of the season. The important thing is to have players for the run-in. If you do that then it increases our chances [of success].”
